Decisions of our past impact who we have become.
The decisions made during the early days of the gold rush defined what Australia would become and who Australians would become.
Australian's are known for their mate-ship, humour, courage, egalitarianism, our strong belief in fair play and fair go.
Most of these values and characteristics came or at least had roots from the gold rush.
With mate-ship, may gold miners had to work together to survive the harsh conditions the miners faced, they had to work together in the goldfields and protect each other from any sort of harm. Although in the goldfields Chinese and Irish miners would often face racism and discrimination, the non Chinese or Irish miners would learn a lot from the Chinese and Irish, giving respect to these miners. Racism and discrimination against the Chinese and Irish have died out over the years and this has made Australia the multi-cultural country we have come to know.
Miners displayed their belief in fair play and fair go when they combined together, no matter what race, too fight high taxes that the government had initiated. A great example was the Eureka stockade, many men worked together and died too get rid of the high taxes the government issued.
